North Dakota School of Science Football released its team captains on Friday.
The five selections, made up by four sophomores and a freshman, were voted to the leadership role by their teammates.
Broomfield, Colo. native Caleb Kennedy is a repeat selection as team captain. The sophomore defensive end led the Wildcats with 16 tackles for loss and nine sacks as a freshman. He earned First-Team MCAC All-Conference player and was a member of the MCAC All-Academic team.
Tony Madison, a sophomore linebacker from Robbinsdale, Minn., is a first-time captain after recording 47 tackles a year ago. Madison has also proven himself as an exceptional student-athlete, earning a 3.2 GPA in his Construction Management Technology program and volunteering for several service projects around campus. He was an honorable mention selection on the All-MCAC Team and was also an MCAC All-Academic pick.
A returning First-Team All-American, Becker, Minn. native Nick Radunz was selected as a captain. The only lineman to earn the honor, Radunz has generated an impressive list of academic and athletic accomplishments. He had maintained a 3.4 GPA at NDSCS, while balancing his role on the football team as well as a position as a tutor in the Student Success Center. Nick was also an MCAC All-Academic Team selection, in addition to being named All-Region 13 and All-MCAC.
Sophomore Nathan Seward is also a first-time captain. Seward was an All-MCAC pick last year, recording 31 tackles and four takeaways, one of which he returned for a touchdown. The Madison, Wis. native currently holds a 3.0 GPA.
The only freshman to be selected as a captain is quarterback T.J. Owens. Hailing from Glendale, Ariz., Owens passed for 3,189 yards, rushed for 1,350 and was responsible for 49 touchdowns in his final two seasons at Glendale High School. He led his team to a 17-4 record in that time. He carried a 4.0 GPA through summer courses at NDSCS.
Head coach Eric Issendorf believes it’s a tremendous honor for these five players to be voted team captains by their peers.
“It’s an excellent honor for our players because it shows that they’ve been a great ambassador of NDSCS Football both on and off the field,” said Issendorf. “They’ve represented our program and the institution well and have also taken on leadership in their position groups. This validates the respect that their teammates have for them and the all-around impact they make within our football family.”
NDSCS will kickoff the 2019 season Saturday afternoon at home against Fond du Lac.
